Hayward Firefighters Local 1909

Robert Joseph Negri

Robert Joseph Negri, 67, of Hayward, CA, passed away peacefully, after a brief cancer diagnosis, with his siblings by his side.

Robert "Bob" was born June 5, 1953 in Wakefield, MI to Renaldo and Mary Helen (Novak) Negri, the third of four children.  He attended Wakefield Central School until the family moved to Marquette, MI in 1963.  Bob graduated in 1971 from Marquette Senior High School.  He attended and graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Luke's School of Nursing in affiliation with Northern Michigan University in 1974.

After graduation Bob worked at Marquette General Hospital, as a Staff Nurse.  He moved in November of 1975 to Los Angeles, CA and continued a stellar Nursing career spanning 46 years in a variety of locations including: UCLA ER Center, Los Angeles, California, Staff and Charge Nurse positions; Brotman Medical Center in Los Angeles and St. Joseph's Medical Center, Santa Monica, California, as Director of Nursing at both hospitals.  Moving to San Francisco in 1981, he worked as a Charge Nurse at San Francisco General Hospital.

Concurrently, Bob was instructing Paramedic Programs through the years at: Los Angeles County Paramedic Training Institute; Daniel Freeman Hospital, Paramedic School, Los Angeles, California; Stanford Medical Center, Paramedic School, Palo Alto, California; and UCSF, Paramedic School, San Francisco, California.  In 2000, Bob took on the extremely rewarding position of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Coordinator, Hayward Fire Department (HFD), Hayward, California, where he excelled and became a beloved member of this special team.  Teaching was a passion and his love and enjoyment of it shone throughout his 20 years with the HFD.  He retired June 15, 2020.  During his storied career in the Medical world, Bob was not only sought after but also greatly admired and respected in his field.

Bob is survived by his sister, Margery Negri and brother, James Negri, along with many cousins and special family friends including Phyllis Ferguson, Douglas Hansen, and Michael Bellefeuille.

He was predeceased by his parents in 1994 and 2003; sister, Mary Elizabeth in 2014 and his partner, Phillip Green, in 2004.

Bob's final mission was one he volunteered for as coordinator of a Coronavirus Testing Station in Hayward, CA.  He managed the set-up and operation of the site and ensured it fully met all the unique, required standards. This is the way Bob operated.  When there was a need, he was always there to help, no matter what!  Unfortunately, in April, he was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer and had to retire from the field he loved so dearly.

The family would like to thank all the members of the Hayward Fire Department and its Administrative Staff.  Their support to our brother during his short illness, through the many visits and kind acts, including providing meals and caring text and email messages, meant so much to Bob and his family.

He was particularly overwhelmed by the following acts in his honor:

  • Designation as an Honorary Member of the Hayward Firefighters Local 1909 that was voted by the members at a recent meeting.
  • Creation by the union of the Robert Negri Scholarship and funding it annually in the amount of $1,000 to help those interested in entering the EMS field.

The family also wants to extend a special thank you to Michael Bellefeuille and Douglas Hansen for their untiring assistance in the care of Bob so he could remain at home.

There will not be a formal service per Bob's request.
